Machine Embroidery and Quilting - all in the Hoop
This is been a long time aim of mine which has been simmering for quite a while. I eventually tried it out - and it works! It is basically a method whereby it is possible to embroider a design on plain fabric and then place batting and the quilt backing behind it to finish off the quilt block with quilting. You end up with a completed block that is all ready for sashing to be added and joined to other blocks in any Quilt as you Go method.
There is no bobbin thread from the initial embroidery showing on the back!
Hoop water soluble stabiliser (WSS) and adhere the fabric to it using glue stick or suitable spray.
(The hoop shown is a home made one but any hoop works)
Embroider the design as usual, stopping before any quilting.
Pull the fabric away from the WSS on the hoop attachment side and slit the
WSS the whole length of the hoop.
Place the batting underneath and pin it to control it.
I had to fold it because I wanted it much longer than the hoop length.
This shows the batting underneath
Thead the batting through the slit in the WSS
Reposition and smooth the fabric and pin in position. Embroider the rest of the design (if any) and the finish the quilting.
Here is the back
The finished block.
If this method is used there must also be a method to join the blocks!
I have seen various ways but none have appealed to me so far. Most require
hand stitching the back but I'm working on a new method. Stay tuned!
(But don't hold your breath - it might be a while <GG>)
