How to make a VERY basic Pincushion
Supplies
Wooden bowl – scavenged from kitchen or Op Shop
Wool – I had some I found at a woolen mill that was closing down some years ago
Carborundum 120 grit (Silicon Carbide) – that I bought from a Jewellery supply house in Sydney http://www.hoj.com.au/index.php
Fairly close weave fabric to contain the grit - I used Kona cotton
Other fabric for outside of pincushion
String
Glues – Water soluble and permanent
Method
1. Cut a circle of the better fabric about twice the diameter of the bowl and couch a piece of string around the edge using a zig-zag stitch.
2 .Cut 2 circles slightly smaller than the diameter of your bowl and stitch together in 2 rows, leaving an opening. Pour the grit in and glue the opening shut with glue stick or water soluble PVA glue. Iron this glue dry before sewing the opening shut. This will prevent grit spilling into sewing machine.
3. This is the grit I used
4. Wrap this filled sachet with wool and place into the large circle of fabric. Pull up the string
and tie tightly.
5. All tied up
6. Last trial before gluing
7. Pincushions breed!
I glued some shelf lining on the bottom to stop them sliding off my table.
