How to make a "Quilt as You Ditch-Stitch" place mat
The reason behind this idea was to make some embroidered place mats with embroidery done through the top and batting, and not have any joins or double layers in the batting as in all the Quilt As You Go projects I've seen. It is probably only suitable for small projects.
The only quilting (later) or stitch in the ditch is through the binding seam.
This is one of a set of 4 place mats I made. The embroidery designs are from http://www.hatchedinafrica.com/ If you would like the assembly instructions as a PDF you can download them here. The file is 1121KB.

I digitized the designs from free clip art from DesignStitch as appliques. They are available for download here. The quilt is approximately 60" x 80" and has a cotton top of left-over fabrics, polar fleece back with cotton batting. The binding is piped.

A cushion I made with the design here. It's approx 18" square.
Here is the back! Why not make a feature of the zip? :-)

I have just done a quick tutorial on how to make this zipper cover.
It's a lapped and piped zipper insertion but has the right side fabric on the underlap.
You can get a PDF for it here
