Kitchen Rubbish Bin
This is what I did to minimize my reliance on plastic supermarket shopping bags (which I had previously recycled as rubbish bin liners). This system started life as a pull-out cupboard which had an enormous box attached (like a drawer) It also had a cut out opening at the top for a bin. The present format has evolved over several years to its current state.
I used the original 'box' which was made of single sided melamine shelving and cut out the bulk of every side with a jigsaw. (It was far too heavy for the drawer runners)
Then I removed the top and replaced it with a new piece of MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) I cut 2 holes to fit the containers I wanted to use. Because I used the materials I had at hand - I had to paint it:-(
This is my 'new improved' rubbish bin setup showing the containers.
Please note - I don't have a container for recyclables such as jars, bottles and tins because I take them straight out to the wheelie bin - but an extra bin could easily be placed behind the existing one on the bottom shelf.
The round one is for wet or contaminated non-recyclable waste (worms apparently don't like onion skins or citrus peel). I line this with the bags I obtain when buying fruit and veges.
The bottom container is for dry non-recyclable stuff like lids, foil and plastic.
Here is my bin system in use!
